The Pons: “Shes the One”
Austin trio The Pons originally began their musical adventure as Lalaland. Really, it was sort of a symbolic thing to change the name. Things felt a tad stagnant. They were on the verge of a personal breakthrough.
While working on new material, the band members took a Sharpie and wrote on the red studio door every single band name they could dream up. Admittedly, most of them were ridiculous, like Cry Me A River Phoenix. But it was good to brainstorm and get it all out.
“We felt like we needed a change,” says guitarist and vocalist Thomas Mazzi. “When we first started out, we were a two piece, kind of an electro pop band, and the name Lalaland seemed to make more sense. But as we grew and the sound did change, even in the Lalaland years, we felt the name wasn’t right anymore. We wanted something we could own, something different that made sense for the band.”
“We thought with the release of the new album, it was the perfect time to do it,” adds bassist and vocalist Ruby Painter.
Their new CD, In the Belly Of A Giant, is definitely different from the last two, with a stronger and edgier indie-folk vibe. Working with Cacophy Recorders’ engineer Erik Wofford, The Pons dedicated a lot more time and effort to their latest release, and it shows.
