Passion Pit Plays Tonight at Emo’s

June 3, 2009 6:00 am by: Laurie Gallardo

Electronic indie-pop band Passion Pit made an interesting, mostly unexpected debut into the music world at large.

The band actually formed in 2007, and was already receiving kudos for best new band in the Boston Phoenix’s Best Best Music Poll, after just a smattering of gigs around town. Around that time, lead vocalist and keyboardist Michael Angelakos had composed six songs for his then-girlfriend as a Valentine’s gift. Angelakos had no idea the songs would get around as quickly as they did through word of mouth. The collection of songs became Passion Pit’s debut EP, Chunk of Change, officially released in 2008. After that, it was an avalanche of attention, including being nominated one of the top bands by CMJ Music Marathon 2008, and placing ninth in the BBC’s Sounds of 2009 list of bands to watch.

Passion Pit is on tour supporting their full-length release, Manners. This includes a stop in Austin for a show tonight at Emo’s outdoor stage, 603 Red River. Doors open at 9 p.m. The bill includes openers Harlem Shakes and Cale Parks. It’s recommended you get there early; there’s a possibility of a sold-out show.

Also, do not leave the dancing shoes at home. You’ll need them.
