Gomez Plays Tonight at Stubb’s

Before Gomez was Gomez, they were the band with a gig but with no name. Yet. The story goes something like this: Their first show was in Leeds in 1996. They’d left a sign for a friend to let him know they were playing, which read, “Gomez the gig’s in here.” Everyone else who happened to come in, though, assumed the band’s name was Gomez. Hmm. Not bad. The band decided to use it.

The Southport, England indie-pop quintet has toured quite extensively to get their music out to the masses. They were in Austin for SXSW 2009 and drew crowds at their show at Stubb’s, and at their performance for the Village Voice showcase at La Zona Rosa.

Right now, they’re touring in support of their 2009 release, A New Tide, and that includes a stop in Austin and a return to Stubb’s Waller Creek Amphitheater, 801 Red River. Opening the show is Austin band JJ Grey and Mofro. Gates open at 6:30 p.m.
