The Thermals Headline Tonight at The Mohawk

May 22, 2009 6:00 am by: Laurie Gallardo

Portland, Oregon does indeed have a cornucopia of indie bands for the ears to feast upon – The Shins, Modest Mouse, The Decemberists…or, if you wanna show off, throw out names like The Jicks, The Blow, and Blitzen Trapper. It’s oodles of indie-rock goodness. And while you’re at it, you can put The Thermals in that very impressive list as well – just add generous portions of punk to the indie-pop and mix until you’re bouncing around the room.

The band, which formed in 2002, recently released their fourth full-length, Now We Can See, the title of which reflects their current approach toward their lyrics. The political and religious tones of earlier works have evolved into more introspection – life, death, love, and whatever one can find inbetween.

The Thermals’ tour brings them to Austin to headline tonight at The Mohawk, 912 Red River, as part of the Chaos In Tejas Fest. Also on the bill are fellow Portland band The Shaky Hands, and Austin’s Til We’re Blue Or Destroy. The show is on the outside stage. Get there around 9 p.m.
