Chicha Libre: “Juaneco en el Cielo”
NYC-based, Chicha, derives its name from a couple of different sources: it was a corn-based liquor favored by the Incas in pre-Colombian days, but more recently, Chicha was the name of a South American music craze which started out in the late 70′s in the Peruvian Amazon.
The band combines Latin beats with traditional cumbias, and throws a bit of surf musicinflection for good measure. They dropped by KUT a few weeks ago and were kind enough to record some tunes.
Today’s song of the day is a tune from that session.
It’s called “Juaneco en el Cielo.”
