Ace Producer-Guitarist Stephen Bruton 1948-2009

An Austin music legend has lost his battle with cancer. Friends say producer, guitarist and songwriter Stephen Bruton died this morning (Saturday morning) in Los Angeles, where he’d been working on a new album.

Bruton may be best remembered as the longtime sideman to Bonnie Raitt and Kris Kristofferson. But he was also considered a wizard in the studio, producing albums for a who’s-who of Austin music luminaries—from Alejandro Escovedo and Marcia Ball to Jimmy Dale Gilmore and Hal Ketchum. Most recently, the Fort Worth native had been working on a project with T-Bone Burnett. Bruton was diagnosed with throat cancer two years ago, and after a series of aggressive treatments, had twice been pronounced ‘clear’. But in recent months, his health had taken a turn for the worse.
