Song of the Day

Ray Wylie Hubbard: “Drunken Poet’s Dream”

April 27, 2009 5:00 am by: Andrew Uhler

Some might say it’s unfortunate that Ray Wylie Hubbard is best known for penning a classic beer-swillin’ song popularized by Jerry Jeff Walker in 1973 called “Up Against the Wall, Redneck Mother.” It’s only unfortunate because Hubbard is much more than your run-of-the-mill, beer drinkin’ Texas songwriter. His tunes are often deeply rooted in the dark themes of addiction and loss.

Today’s song of the day is a song Hubbard wrote with fellow Texas songwriter Hayes Carll. Hubbard performed this version live in KUT’s historic studio 1A a few weeks back.

It’s called “Drunken Poet’s Dream.”
