Meeting in the Middle
The City of Austin's employees might soon have as much political power as Austin's police and fire departments.
“Meet and confer” makes the City Manager meet the unions at the bargaining table whenever the unions ask. State Representative Dawnna Dukes wants to give that same power to the City of Austin’s employees.
Representation rights can be very expensive for the city. The police and fire departments have been able to bargain their way to some of the highest salaries in the state.
