Mates of State Play Tonight at La Zona Rosa

While perusing the official website of indie-pop duo Mates of State, there’s a chance one may stumble upon a list of frequently asked questions. It’s the usual: The band name, do you get comparisons to (fill in the blank), and gee, what’s it like being married and playing music together, the answer to the latter being, “Probably, exactly how you imagine it would be.”

Keyboardist Kori Gardner and drummer Jason Hammel first started playing music together in 1997 as Mates of State. These days, they’re on the Barsuk label, which released their fifth full-length CD Re-Arrange Us (2008), and doing various cool things – one of which was joining NPR’s This American Life tour in 2008 to provide music between readings from peeps like Sarah Vowell and Dave Eggers.

Mates of State 2009 spring tour includes a stop in Austin for a show tonight at La Zona Rosa, 612 W. 4th St. The opening line-up includes Jacksonville, FL indie-poppers Black Kids and Sunbears. Doors open at 8 p.m., and the show starts at 9 p.m.
