Dragons Swim In Lady Bird Lake

April 25, 2009 6:53 pm by: KUT Staff

The 11th Annual Dragon Boat Festival is hosted by the Asian American Community Partnership and Asian American Cultural Center in Austin.

The Dragon boat races are a tradition rich in the Chinese culture dating back to the once prime minister Chu Yuan who was purged from his position. Yuan was said to throw himself into the river. The villagers ran to his rescue in their boats but Yuan was dead.

Each boat has a drummer at the head of the dragon boat that keeps the rowers in sync.
