Dengue Fever Plays Tonight at The Mohawk
Do you remember the very beginning of the film Ghost World, based on the graphic novel? Terry Zwigoff directed it, and during the opening credits, there is the coolest Bollywood go-go crazy-time dance number from the 60s. It’s awesome cool, and something you probably wouldn’t expect. In a similar vein, and just as superbly awesome, is the music of LA band Dengue Fever, only they combine Cambodian pop with psychedelic rock. Yes, it’s two different types of music from different cultures, but the vibe is similar – traditional sounds reshaped to compliment contemporary styles. Very cool indeed.
Dengue Fever was first formed around 2001 by Ethan Holtzman and brother Zac, inspired by a trip Ethan took to Cambodia. They found their lead singer, Chhom Nimol, in a nightclub in Little Phnom Penh area of Long Beach.
You can see the band at their show tonight at The Mohawk, 912 Red River. Opening the gig are Brooklyn-based Latin/psychedelic masters Chicha Libre. It’s a Monday, but give this some strong consideration. This show is highly recommended, kids.
