Asa was born in Paris, but her family returned to Lagos, Nigeria when she was only two years old. She spent her childhood in Nigeria, listening to her father’s record collection – Marvin Gaye, Bob Marley, Fela Kuti – but returned to Paris in her twenties to begin her career as an artist.
Asa just released her debut, eponymous album here in the States, and was in town a couple of weeks ago for SXSW. She was kind enough to drop by KUT’s historic studio 1A to perform some tunes from the new album.
Today’s song of the day is from that session. It’s a tune called “Jailor.”
