The Story Behind New Homeless Numbers

It’s done every 2 years. Volunteers fanned out across Austin in January to count the local homeless population. As part of our occasional series on homelessness, KUT spoke with David Gomez, coordinator for Homeless Services at the Austin-Travis County Mental Health Mental Retardation Center. He says the 2009 count in Austin totaled about 4,600 people. He was quick to add that the number is low and does not tell the whole story of homelessness in Central Texas.
