Some groups worry that lawmakers' excitement of being flush with cash could lead to careless spending.
A week after President Obama signed the stimulus bill, TxDOT approved half a billion dollars of the stimulus money for maintenance projects. They are voting Thursday to appropriate another billion for construction projects around the State.
But TxDOT’s quick response might have a benign source. Texas Senator Kirk Watson from Austin says that TxDOT has spent the last four months deciding where to spend the stimulus money. The agency was preparing for a much smaller window to appropriate the money than the one year Washington mandated.
