Hays County Judge Liz Sumter has sent a disaster declaration to Governor Rick Perry because of the severe drought and the economic impacts its had on the county’s agricultural producers.

Already Guadalupe, Bastrop, and Caldwell counties have locally declared drought disasters.

Hays County Judge Liz Sumter said in a press release issued on Monday March 3, “This declaration paves the way for the Governor’s Office todeclare Hays County an agricultural disaster area and request aid for agriculturalproducers from the USDA in the form of low-interest loans.”

The declaration comes at time when several Central Texas counties are fighting wildfires and the threat of them. A burn ban is in place for Hays County.
