Giant Sand: "Jumpin' Jack Flash"
Howe Gelb formed Giant Sand in 1985, in Tuscon, Arizona. For a long time, the rhythm section consisted of John Convertino and Joey Burns. The two left the band when their side project, Calexico, began to gain more momentum and overtake the notoriety of Giant Sand.
But Gelb forged on, and continues to make interesting and innovative sounds. Gelb was in town for SXSW a couple of weeks ago and dropped by KUT’s historic Studio 1A to perform a few songs. Perhaps the highlight was a cover of The Rolling Stones‘ “Jumpin’ Jack Flash.” It’s today’s song of the day.
