When NPR Music blogger and former Sleater Kinney guitarist Carrie Brownstein was handed a 900 song disc of SXSW music, things got interesting. The goal was to pick bands that she might be interested in listening to and share her recommendations with readers on her Monitor Mix blog, but the task of all that listening was a bit daunting. To cope, she began weeding out bands based on snap judgments and aesthetic disagreements.

“As much as I’d like to think I will sit down and listen to all 900 songs, that idea is simply unrealistic. Instead, I must find ways of making snap decisions, instinctive decisions, based on arbitrary rules. But are these rules merely of my own design, or are there universal principles that draw us to one artist and make us reject another?”
