Wealthier districts would like to see some changes in the property tax appraisal system as the towns around them try to rebuild. Traditionally cash strapped districts asked for help in keeping down construction costs – which can skyrocket after a hurricane. Despite the hardships, school leaders seemed optimistic. They said that residents have jumped over hurdles to keep their kids in school. All they need is someone to meet them half way. Shapiro and the committee hope to be that “someone” – they said they will try to work out what the 2009 session can do to help.
