January 31, 2009: JJ Grey & Mofro
The venerable, Chicago-based Alligator blues record label has a history of presenting some of the genre’s finest performers since founder Bruce Iglauer produced Hound Dog Taylor and the House Rockers in 1971. Occasionally, younger artists step into the fold to shine a new light on the label. Florida’s JJ Grey and his band Mofro play Southern soul and funky R&B on last summer’s Alligator-printed Orange Blossoms, complete with horns, strings and hot vocal accompaniment.
