Electricity Rates Spark to New Heights

The Cities Aggregation Power Project coalition released a report today showing Texas electricity rates have increased 64% in the first eight years of deregulation.

The Texas Legislature passed Senate Bill 7 to deregulate the electricity market and drive down rates through competition.

The bill’s 1999 sponsor—now a power company lobbyist—blamed the increased rates on rising natural gas prices.
