University of Texas at Austin’s head baseball coach Augie Garrido was arrested Saturday around 1 a.m. by Austin Police. Garrido was stopped at the 500 block of Baylor Street near downtown Austin and was arrested on charges of drunken driving.

The university has suspended Garrido with pay until more information is known.

Men’s Athletic Director DeLoss Dodds released this statement.

“This is a difficult and regrettable situation that we are taking very seriously. I spoke with Coach Garrido and he’s devastated and realizes he made a serious mistake. He deeply regrets putting the university in this position and will act quickly to do what’s right.”

69-year old Augie Garrido has been the baseball head coach at UT since 1996. Under his direction the Longhorns have played in the College World Series in five of the last nine seasons.
