Texas Unemployment Numbers Rise

January 23, 2009 4:52 pm by: KUT Staff

Unemployment in Texas jumped another 0.3% in December.

The jobless rate stands at 6.0%, according to the Texas Workforce Commission. That rate is still more than a percent lower than the national unemployment rate.

In the Austin-Round Rock region, the rate climbed to 5.2%, up 0.2% from November. The Workforce Commission attributes many of the lost jobs to the government sector, thanks to the holiday break for state education staff.

Despite the rate increase, figures from the Workforce Commission claim more jobs are being created in Austin than are being lost over the past 12 months.
