Ray Wylie Hubbard: “Black Wings”

January 5, 2009 5:00 am by: Andrew Uhler

Ray Wylie Hubbard probably wouldn’t like to be called an ‘elder statesman‘ of the Texas music scene, but there doesn’t seem to be any way around it. Hubbard rose to fame in the time of the Cosmic Cowboys, writing and performing with the likes of Willie Nelson, Waylon Jennings and Jerry Jeff Walker.

Hubbard’s battle with drug and alcohol abuse is well documented (he credits the late Stevie Ray Vaughan with helping him get clean and saving his life), and his more recent work is more introspective and almost sage-like.

This tune, “Black Wings,” is a dark and thoughtful song Hubbard recorded live at KUT a few weeks ago.
