Phosphorescent: “Reasons to Quit”

January 19, 2009 5:00 am by: Andrew Uhler

Phosphorescent is the stage name of Brooklyn-by-way-of-Athens-Georgia’s Matthew Houck. Known for his Iron & Wine-style alt-country, Houck has taken on an impressive challenge for his latest effort: a collection of Willie Nelson covers he’s calling To Willie.

This tune is the first cut on the new album, which hits record stores February 3rd, and it was actually written by Merle Haggard on Merle and Willie’s 1983 album Pancho and Lefty (the title track of which was written by Townes Van Zandt).

And though Houck wasn’t born here, nor does he live in the Lone Star State, the treatment of this tune, called ‘Reasons to Quit‘ is right on.
