January 15, 2009 2:34 pm by: Jay Trachtenberg

Born in Germany to American parents, local trumpeter Jeff Lofton combines pure be-bop and modern jazz in the vein of Dizzy Gillespie, Miles Davis and John Coltrane, with a sweet yet biting tone. Following music studies at the University of South Carolina, Lofton performed with such talents as saxophonist Rene Sandoval, Ron Westray, Wycliff Gordon of the Wynton Marsalis septet, Fred Wesley of James Brown’s band and Fred Hampton of Chicago’s A.A.C.M. Hear The Jeff Lofton Quartet live in Studio 1A Thursday at 2:00 p.m. on Music with Jay Trachtenberg before being honored by Mayor Will Wynn Thursday evening and lighting up the Elephant Room Friday night.
