The Fiery Furnaces: “Duplexes of the Dead”
Brother and sister duo Eleanor and Matthew Friedberger are better known as The Fiery Furnaces. The Chicago natives now live and work in Brooklyn, and their music has seen many deviations.
On their debut LP, Gallowsbird Park, the band relied on a blues-rock feel, similar to that of The White Stripes. And then there was their 2005 release, Rehearsing My Choir, which featured the Friedberger’s grandmother narrating stories of her life (the album was described as ‘difficult,’ even by those that liked it).
But on their latest release, Widow City, the band has shortened up the song length and concentrated more on pop sensibility and melody. This tune, “Duplexes of the Dead,” is a great example of The Fiery Furnaces experimental, yet infectious style.
