Minus the Bear: “Throwin’ Shapes”

December 15, 2008 5:00 am by: Andrew Uhler

At one time, Seattle-based Minus the Bear was perhaps best known for their obscure song titles (their first LP included such lofty names as “Thanks for the Killer Game of Crisco® Twister” and “Absinthe Party At The Fly Honey Warehouse“).

But on their latest full length release, Planet of Ice, the band seems to have grown up and hit its stride. Everything is tight and calculated, from the perfectly mic’ed drums to the oft appearing synthesizer strokes. And upon seeing this band live at this year’s Fun Fun Fun Festival last month, their musicianship was validated.

This song, “Throwin’ Shapes,” is the epitome of a tricky sounding rock song that’s ultimately held together by head-bob-able melodies.
