December 2, 2008: George Duke

December 3, 2008 11:06 am by: Paul Ray

Beginning in 1969, extraordinary California-based keyboardist and current bandleader George Duke contributed greatly to bridging the gap between the R&B of Ray Charles, Les McCann-inspired soul jazz and the comic rock of Frank Zappa, all with a signature style that’s neither technical nor straight-ahead. Duke’s pure and versatile aesthetic helped push his career along as a producer of pop music post 1976, although his latest Dukey Treats digs back to his jazz past. Hear George Duke sit down at the 88 keys in Studio 1A to play a few tunes, talk about his work with Miles Davis and offer his impressions of Austin’s vibrant scene live on Paul Ray’s Jazz with guest host Jay Trachtenberg.
