Dave Alvin: “Two Lucky Bums”

December 9, 2008 5:00 am by: Andrew Uhler

Dave Alvin is perhaps best known for his work in the late 80′s with the seminal L.A.-based punk rock band X. Alvin was the lead guitarist. But before the X gig, Dave was a founding member of The Blasters with his older brother, Phil.

Following a stint in the ‘deathrock’ group The Flesh Eaters, Alvin turned his attention to songwriter-style acoustic music. And in 2000 he won a Grammy for best contemporary folk album.

This tune, “Two Lucky Bums,” is a song Alvin has recently re-dedicated to his longtime friend and collaborator, Chris Gaffney, who died suddenly in April. This song is a great showcase for Alvin’s distinct baritone voice.
