Sleepercar Plays Tonight at The Mohawk

November 17, 2008 6:00 am by: Laurie Gallardo

Jim Ward was in Japan when he was inspired to pen the notes of a song he was making up. It struck him literally during some of the last days that At the Drive In would be together, on tour.

Cut to 2002: Ward recorded some more of these ideas swimming round his head in a studio in West Texas. Sparta was still together, but Ward continued to explore his solo material. Slowly but surely, piece by piece, it started to come together. He meticulously recorded bits here and there in different places, calling in other musicians to play with him, but it was happening. Sleepercar was no longer just an idea. It came into being…and frankly, the music is gorgeous.

‘Tis true – I, your humble author and Austin Music Minute producer, Laurie Gallardo, am an El Paso native, as Mr. Ward is. Full disclosure here. But let me state without reservation, or playing favorites, that Sleepercar is worth checking out, if you haven’t already. The band performs tonight on the outside stage at the Mohawk, 912 Red River St. Super-psych experimental wonder twins The Morakestra will open the show. Doors open at 8 p.m.
