Fun³ Fest ‘08 – The Eastern Sea: “The Menu”

Perhaps one of my favorite discoveries of the past year came last Friday night at the Local Music Is Sexy party thrown by Austinist. The event was a sort of gear-up toward the Fun Fun Fun Fest, and a platform for some of our local talent to perform before (what organizers believed to be) a national audience.

A band of young students that call themselves The Eastern Sea got things underway, and their talent was noticeable from the start. Lead singer and songwriter Matthew Hines crafts intricate pop songs (there’s no denying a comparison to Death Cab For Cutie or The Mountain Goats), and his vocals were some of the strongest of the entire weekend.

This song, called “The Menu,” appears on their brand new eponymous EP. And if this tune (and the entire EP for that matter) is indicative of this band’s future, I think Austin and the rest of the indie-pop world will be hearing a lot from this homegrown act for a while.
