Dirty Dozen Brass Band Performs Tonight at Antone’s

November 6, 2008 6:00 am by: Laurie Gallardo

Like everyone in their hometown of New Orleans, the members of the Dirty Dozen Brass Band were devastated by Hurricane Katrina. So much was lost. Their lives would never be the same.

A year later, there were still many repairs to be made, and healing to be done, but it couldn’t come quickly enough. People were still picking up the shattered pieces of whatever remained of their lives. The Dirty Dozen was reminded of a prolific song by Marvin Gaye released in 1971 – amidst pain, strife, poverty, war and hatred, Gaye’s voice rose above the chaos to ask the world, “What’s Going On?”

It’s a question that’s as relevant today as it was then. The Dozen released an album in August 2006, What’s Going On, a reconceptualization of Gaye’s classic, and a powerful reflection of the emotional struggle that Katrina survivors continued to face after the storm.

The Dirty Dozen return to Austin tonight for a show at Antone’s, 213 W. 5th. Opening the show is Florida sacred steel ensemble The Lee Boys. Doors open at 8 p.m. Get it while it’s hot.
