Todd Snider: “Dividing the Estate”
In the storytelling tradition of songwriting greats like Townes Van Zandt and Steve Earle, Todd Snider crafts thoughtful, funny and (sometimes surprisingly) poignant songs. On his latest release, Peace Queer, Snider tackles everything from political theory to the Vietnam War, and always manages to do it with his tongue firmly in his cheek.
On the song “Dividing the Estate,” Snider imagines a dead uncle and the post-funeral materialism that follows. “Bursting with pride/He was way overweight” Snider muses. Perhaps he’s suggesting something about American consumption – but maybe he’s just pulling your leg.
The entire Peace Queer album is available as a free download here. The record was officially released this morning.
