Sonya Kitchell Performs Tonight at The Parish

October 30, 2008 6:00 am by: Laurie Gallardo

Young singer and guitarist Sonya Kitchell has a voice and songwriting skill beyond her years. She released her 2006 debut album, Words Came Back To Me, at just 16 years old. Critics and fans couldn’t help but admire her gorgeous vocals and edgy, deeply personal lyrics, songs mixing jazz with elements of folk.

Kitchell found a mentor in legendary jazz artist Herbie Hancock, who was so impressed with her talent that he invited her to perform with him and his all-star band at the 2006 Sonoma Jazz Festival, and on his tour of the West Coast in support of his Grammy-Award winning album River. Hancock encouraged Kitchell to improvise and experiment, something that undoubtedly inspired her on her 2008 release, This Storm, recorded with Grammy Award-winning producer Malcolm Burn.

Kitchell’s current tour includes a stop here in Austin tonight at The Parish, 214 E. 6th St., with The Slip and solo performances by The Slip’s Brad Barr.
