Michael McDermott Plays Tonight at The Cactus Cafe

October 27, 2008 6:00 am by: Laurie Gallardo

Folk rock singer-songwriter Michael McDermott got hooked into the big time at the ripe old age of 20. Along with that came all the exotic excesses that go with the territory. Drugs and alcohol were readily available. He did it all. Then he hit rock bottom with a crash. His desire was to experience all there is in life, the good and the bad. He had no idea the bad would completely take over.

Yet, even during those darkest hours, McDermott was creating beautiful, inspiring music, songs of light that no one would’ve guessed would come from a man who had hit difficult times because of addiction.

Finally, in November 2004, McDermott got a frightening moment of clarity. He was arrested for possession of cocaine and found himself in the Cook County Jail in Chicago – one of the toughest places one could imagine. However, it was a sobering experience that turned his life around. He picked himself up and began writing from the soul. He’s never looked back.

McDermott will perform at the Cactus Cafe, 2247 Guadalupe, at 24th and Guadalupe. The show begins at 8 p.m.
