Larry Harlow: “Autumn Leaves”

October 29, 2008 5:00 am by: Peter Babb

Just last week, as the temperatures here in Austin started to turn south, producer, composer and multi-instrumentalist Larry Harlow dropped by KUT’s studios to play some tunes with local Latin favorites, Grupo Fantasma.

Harlow is widely credited with residing at the forefront of the salsa music explosion of the 1970s. And some say, at his insistence, the Grammy Association created the Latin Grammy Award.

One of the tunes Harlow played last week at KUT, was a classic Johnny Mercer tune called “Autumn Leaves.” It was a standout treatment, featuring Harlow’s salsa treatment and Grupo’s undeniable flair.
