Jolie Holland: “Palmyra”

October 20, 2008 5:00 am by: Andrew Uhler

Jolie Holland was born in suburban Houston – which doesn’t necessarily come out in her music…how could it? But her grandparents were born in the same part of East Texas as Ledbelly, and Holland is apparently proud of it.

On songs like “Palmyra,” from her latest release The Living and the Dead, Holland creates a heartfelt prayer for the brokenhearted – much in the style of Lucinda Williams. It’s a smart blend of her East Texas roots with a more polished pop sound.
