Dana Falconberry: “Crooked River”

Often in today’s hyper-specialized music market, bands will shuck comparisons and avoid revealing influences, preferring not to be “pigeonholed.” Usually, though, it is easy enough to establish some sort of similarity between this band and that, or this person’s sound and an obvious predecessor’s.

But while listening to Dana Falconberry’s latest release, Oh Skies of Grey, try as one might to pin Falconberry’s sound down – it proves exceedingly difficult. On songs like “Crooked River,” a song she performed live here at KUT a few weeks ago, her strangely infectious tone and complex harmonies draw you in, and leave you wondering where a voice like that could be coming from.
