Nellie McKay Performs Tonight at Stubb’s Indoor Venue

August 7, 2008 6:00 am by: Laurie Gallardo

Nellie McKay is one phenomenal performer. Seriously. There she is, at the piano, flying at the keys and belting her heart out with an incredible style that seems almost effortless. Her lyrics are witty, intelliegent and playful. She flows from jazz to pop, to something funky and danceable, to hip-hop – and whatever happens to fall in between.

Before she really honed her songwriting talents, McKay (pronounced Mc-EYE, thank you) spent two brief years studying at the Manhattan School of Music before dropping out to make a living as a stand-up comedian in Manhattan clubs. She released her first CD, Get Away From Me, produced by Beatles sound engineer Geoff Emerick, in 2004. That same year, she was one of the major breakout artists at the South By Southwest Festival.

McKay is now in the midst of a summer tour, that’s bringing her to Austin for a show tonight at Stubb’s indoor stage, 801 Red River St. Songwriter Lee Simmons will open the show. This will be a night of fantastic entertainment. Don’t miss out.
