Molly Venter Performs Saturday Night at 3400 Kerbey Lane

For today’s Austin Music Minute, I asked local songwriter Molly Venter to give me details about the show she’s doing tomorrow night before she takes off on her summer tour to promote her album, Love Me Like You Mean It.

I admit I was a little confused when she said she’d be playing at 3400 Kerbey Lane. It’s not often you hear about shows at a yoga center, but Venter knew it would create just the right atmosphere.

“I love playing at venues like the Cactus Cafe and Flipnotics,” she says. “I recently sang with String’s Attached at Bend Studio in Dallas, which is a yoga studio by day, and loved the intimacy and focus that space provided. I was very last minute in putting together a show before I leave on tour, so when a friend offered up this space it was perfect!”

Love Me Like You Mean It is a compilation of Venter’s previous work, along with some unreleased material. Producer Michael Hynes brought together a variety of talented musicians to contribute to the album (Bukka Allen, Rick Richards, Andre Moran) at the Hideout Studio in South Central Austin. The goal was to create a sound that would appeal to a broader audience, yet maintain Venter’s original style.

“This is the first time I really handed the songs over to a producer to interpret,” Venter explains. “I still write songs in order to make sense of my experience and the world around me. That hasn’t changed, but I think as I get older I write from a more hopeful, focused, grounded place that more people can sink into.”

The performance begins at 8 p.m. Saturday at 3400 Kerbey Lane.
