The Garifuna style of music is a mix of African and Central American grooves, mostly perpetuated by attempts at colonization from the British in the early 1700s to the people of the same name along the Caribbean coast. Belize-born Andy Palacio became a major figure in the ‘80s Garifuna community after joining a group of poets, lyricists and musicians and creating the genre of punta rock. This year’s Watina from Palacio and the Garifuna Collective is a stunning achievement featuring performers from Belize, Guatemala, and Honduras. Fellow Garifuna guitar master Aurelio Martinez joined Andy Palacio live in Studio 1A before the group’s in-store at Waterloo Records and a show at Hogg Auditorium.
